الملخص

This paper argues the cultural appropriateness of the communicative approach to non-native English speaking learners of English. It deals with how the communicative approach is originated in native speaking contexts and it might not be appropriate in non-native English contexts. The argument is presented in the light of three concentric circles: The Inner circle—referring to English as a first language varieties such as in the U.S and U.K., the Outer circle—referring to English as a second language varieties, and the Expanding circle—meaning English as a foreign language varieties. It is widely accepted that the English language and English language teaching carry notions of native-speakerism and imperialism. One instrument to these is the communicative approach. Therefore, this paper discusses the cultural appropriateness of the communicative approach and suggests alternative arguments to mitigate its influence on non-native English speaking cultural contexts.
